Amherst, New Hampshire
Birthplace of Horace Greeley and at one time, Amherst was the county seat with much colonial history. It was an important New Hampshire hub until the 19th century when the railroads bypassed the center of town. Many of the historic homes and buildings that surround the town green have been nicely preserved. Thanks to many public volunteers, there are Fourth of July parades, Christmas tree lightings and band concerts on the town green every year.
Amherst residents work in neighboring Manchester or Nashua and some commuter further south to Massachussetts, while others run small businesses in town.
